Profile

I am a Professor of Statistical Machine Learning in the School of Computer and Mathematical Sciences at The University of Adelaide. I am affiliated with the Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML) where I am one of the Theme Leads of the Responsible AI Research Centre (RAIR) leading efforts on AI evaluation for safety and fairness. I also serve on the steering committee of the Adelaide Data Science Centre (ADSC).

In addition to my substantive appointment in Adelaide, I am a Visiting Professor with the College of Computing and Data Science, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (since 2025), and a Visiting Professor with the Research Center for Statistical Machine Learning, The Institute of Statistical Mathematics, Tokyo (since 2024).

I am a Fellow of the ELLIS Society, where I am affiliated with the Machine Learning for Earth and Climate Sciences Program. I am also a member of the Machine Learning & Global Health Network.

Before moving to Adelaide in October 2022, I was an Associate Professor at the Department of Statistics, University of Oxford, a Fellow of Mansfield College, and a Faculty Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute.

My research spans a wide variety of topics at the interface between machine learning and statistical methodology, including robust and trustworthy machine learning, causal inference, uncertainty quantification, and large-scale nonparametric and kernel methods.

I will have openings for Postdocs and PhD students to join my team in Adelaide, starting from 2025. If you are interested and have a strong machine learning, statistical or mathematical background – please get in touch.
